Maggie Wardell Profile

I presently live in Hemington, near Frome in Somerset but am originally from Scotland where I trained at Duncan of Jordanstone College Art in Dundee, and specialized in Graphic Design.

Based in Glasgow in the 70’s, I worked as a medical illustrator, secondary school art teacher, freelance illustrator, and graphic designer at the Glasgow Hunterian Museum, before moving to London in 1979 where I was a  designer for several years at the Science Museum in South Kensington.  After a year’s sabbatical working in the USA, I returned to London and was employed as studio manager for the publications department of a fashion forecasting company.

From the mid-eighties till 1992, I was employed as a Senior Lecturer in Art & Design, and Illustration at the College of Higher Education Ipswich, Suffolk, then a part-time lecturer at Redditch College before moving to the South-West where I worked with my husband for several years in the leisure and catering business.

During this time, I have continued to practice and develop my design and illustrative work, using a blend of lettering and decorative imagery to create bespoke gifts for friends, family and private commissions.

As well as the more intimate pieces, I have painted the 10x1 metre mural, ‘Devon through the Seasons, on the swimming pool wall of a private holiday complex in East Devon. However I have always been attracted by the jewel-like quality of the miniature and my current work is on a much smaller scale.
